City Council Regular Meeting Minutes <br />September 11, 2018 <br />Page 9 <br />Ms. Moina Dixson stated during the lockdown, the teachers said it wasn't a big deal. <br />Ms. Jayla Mims stated she is being bullied because of her skin color and her clothing choices. <br />She does not get the privilege of being accepted. She stated every year during Black History <br />Month, she gets strange looks and she is not understood in school. <br />8 Ms. Meiran Carlson said she is part of the group CHANGE. On April 20, 2018, students at St. <br />9 Anthony Middle School held a walk -out. They were told where to walk and when to return to <br />10 school. In schools, children have a `no guns' expectation. CHANGE has been an active group for <br />11 6 months. She spoke about Mayors for Our Lives and asked Mayor Faust to participate in this. <br />12 She spoke about the lockdown, saying they had no idea what was going on. This was the result <br />13 of an email that was received. She texted her family and friends and was very scared. She stated <br />14 something needs to be done and she is calling on the Council to help make their voices heard. <br />15 <br />16 Ms. Nona Kennedy asked the Council to get on board with them, make a difference, treat them <br />17 with respect, and listen to them. <br />18 <br />19 Mayor Faust stated Council feels their pain. He knows there is an issue and they will look into it. <br />20 Ms. Kennedy stated they will stay until they get an answer.
