Parks Commission Regular Meeting Minutes <br />September 10, 2018 <br />Page 2 <br /> <br /> <br />suggested more tree planting in Trillium with students leading the effort. Ms. Doolan asked 1 <br />the Commission how CFS can assist with organics recycling and also the status of the Park 2 <br />Commission name change adding Sustainability. CFS would like to meet with the Parks 3 <br />Commission prior to goal setting for 2019. She would like to see more done with the Tree 4 <br />City rating. The goats will be arriving this week at Nativity. The fencing has been put up. 5 <br />Nativity has very hilly landscaping with invasive species. Goats are good at controlling buck 6 <br />thorn. There will be 4 goats. Chair Bentz asked if this is a rent a goat program and Ms. Doolan 7 <br />stated it was. Chair Bentz thanked CFS for their participation in VillageFest and he got a 8 <br />bucket. 9 <br /> 10 <br />VII. COMMISSION REPORTS 11 <br /> 12 <br />Ms. Webster provided an update on the grant to expand the playground at the community 13 <br />center to create an outdoor classroom. Work has been done with a master gardener and the 14 <br />sod was removed along the fence. There is a storage shed. September 22, an installation day 15 <br />will be hosted for installation of the equipment. All families are encouraged to use the space. 16 <br /> 17 <br />Ms. Palmer stated the Wilshire Park construction with all the classrooms completed except the 18 <br />gymnasium which is planned for mid-late October. A fall fest is scheduled for October 13 for 19 <br />residents to see the new construction. The new superintendent and high school principals are 20 <br />new. There is a new visitor procedure at all schools with new security measures. 21 <br /> 22 <br />Commissioner Bellinger stated she enjoyed the VillageFest parade. 23 <br /> 24 <br />Commissioner Overman had no update. 25 <br /> 26 <br />Chair Bentz stated since the last Parks Commission Meeting the City Council agreed to the 27 <br />site for the organics collection, recommended by the Parks Commission. 28 <br /> 29 <br />Commissioner Jordahl-Redlin stated the fourth grade teachers at Wilshire Park and St. Charles 30 <br />have been contacted about the Water Conservation Poster Contest. Presentations and judging 31 <br />will be scheduled in October. The winners will attend a City Council meeting. She 32 <br />participated in the pollinator pathway planting last weekend. 33 <br /> 34 <br />Commissioner Ksiazek had no update. 35 <br /> 36 <br />Mr. Hartman stated staff has been working with Ramsey County on the organics collection. 37 <br />They are working with the contractor on the design and pricing. The signage is being worked 38 <br />on for the site. Everything should be ready to go in the next two weeks. Council was 39 <br />introduced to the Youth in Leadership program and Council agreed to have a student as part 40 <br />of the Parks Commission and Planning Commission. Aye Keita was introduced as a non-41 <br />voting member of the Parks Commission. Ms. Keita stated she is happy to be part of the 42 <br />Youth in Leadership program. Mr. Hartman St. Anthony was accepted in the MPCA 43 <br />GreenCorp Program and he will find out on Sept 28 who the GreenCorp member will be. He 44 <br />reviewed some of the initiatives the member will be working on. Staff is wrapping up the 45 <br />2018 summer season. This year the splash pads will be closing today (September 10, 2018). 46
