Parks Commission Regular Meeting Minutes <br />December 3, 2018 <br />Page 2 <br /> <br /> <br />2018. She reviewed some cooperative programs with various organizations and schools. Ms. 1 <br />Baguss announced upcoming events. 2 <br /> 3 <br />B. Presentations about Tree Diversity, Climate Resiliency, and Proper Planting 4 <br />Techniques. 5 <br /> 6 <br />Ms. Karen Zumach, Director of Community Forestry, Treetrust made a presentation on Tree 7 <br />Diversity, Climate Resiliency and Proper Planting Techniques. Tree Trust was founded in 8 <br />1976 and is a Minnesota non-profit corporation. Ms. Zumach described the benefits of trees. 9 <br />She reviewed her findings on the trees in St. Anthony. 80% of trees are represented by 5 10 <br />genera. Ms. Zumach reviewed in detail proper tree planting techniques. 11 <br /> 12 <br />Commissioner Overman asked how fragile young trees are and Ms. Zumach stated they are 13 <br />more fragile since the truck is thinner. 14 <br /> 15 <br />Dr. Palmer asked where is the best place to purchase trees and Ms. Zumach stated the closest 16 <br />garden center to the area where tree will be planted. 17 <br /> 18 <br />Commissioner Jordahl Redlin asked for a list to provide to contractors of good diverse trees to 19 <br />plant for replacing removed trees. Ms. Zumach stated there are many City Foresters across the 20 <br />metro area who could provide information. 21 <br /> 22 <br />Commissioner Bellinger stated she lives on very wet soil and what would be a good tree 23 <br />recommendation. Ms. Zumach referred her to U of M website “Tough Trees for Tough Sites. 24 <br /> 25 <br />Ms. Zumach can refer the City to contractors who would be happy to share types of trees to 26 <br />plant lists. 27 <br /> 28 <br /> Presentation of Water Conservation Poster Contest 29 <br /> 30 <br />Ms. Erin Jordahl Redlin, Parks Commissioner, provided a summary of her sessions with the 31 <br />students. She described the poster contest criteria. There were four winners and one honorable 32 <br />mention. The winners were Aryan S (Honorable Mention), Ellie M (4th Place), Ella B (3rd 33 <br />Place), Josie T (2nd Place), and Juno F (1st Place). 34 <br /> 35 <br />C. Proposed Changes to Parks Commission Name and Duties. 36 <br /> 37 <br />Ms. Erin Jordahl Redlin, Parks Commissioner reviewed a proposal for proposed changes to 38 <br />Parks Commission Name and Duties. The following language is being proposed to add to the 39 <br />current purpose: The Parks and Sustainability Commission advises the City Council regarding 40 <br />policies, practices, and proposals that relate to the sustainable use and management of 41 <br />environmental resources, including air, water, energy, land, ecological resources and waste. 42 <br /> 43 <br />One non-voting liaison member from a specified community group focused on sustainability, 44 <br />appointed by members of that organization is proposed. 45 <br /> 46
