2018 Annual Report • Fire Department • St. Anthony Village, Minnesota

15 | P a g e

IV. Training
By Captain & Training Officer Ryan Anttila
Training for fire departments is a very important aspect, and much of the
St. Anthony Fire Department’s focus is on preparing our people for the
types of incidents that they may encounter while working for us. Many of
the calls we prepare for are the ones that happen very infrequently, but that
does not negate the preparation needed.
Training has been and will continue a primary focus for the St. Anthony Fire Department. Last
year we focused on improving our firefighting skills. One of the goals of the training
department is to increase the comfort of our firefighters with tasks that may need to be
accomplished on the fire ground regardless of experience.
The beginning of every year we focus on an active-shooter scenario with our police department.
We have felt for several years that there are important skills involved that we want to keep up
with. The fire department has a very specific role that we have determined, and we practice the
skills involved with fast medical assessment, getting any victims to safety, and rapid transport
to the hospital. The research shows that if such an event were to occur the process we practice
would likely save many lives that would otherwise be lost.
A benefit to fire departments is the ability to have outside agencies come in and teach, or speak
regarding a specific set of skills or situations. These experts bring a unique perspective or new
techniques to our department, and provide specific skills along the way.
We had a presenter from Hennepin Technical Specialized Training come and discuss emergency
response concerns with hybrid and alternative fuel vehicles. This presentation included unique
concerns that come with the differences compared to a traditional gas or diesel powered vehicle.
It was very informative as the technology and features continue to change.
