2018 Annual Report • Fire Department • St. Anthony Village, Minnesota

16 | P a g e

instructor was able to give our firefighters an in-depth look at a fire pump, and had an actual
pump with cut- away sections to improve our understanding of how a fire pump works and
what we need to do in order to maintain and keep them in working order.
One of our more fun drills of the year utilized the Water Tower Park adjacent to our water
treatment facility. Our firefighters were able to practice skills involving self-rescue. A hose-line
was wound around the playground equipment to emulate having to follow a hose-line out of a
structure after a collapse or other emergency.
Our largest drill of any year is our live fire drill. This year we used the Minneapolis Fire
Department’s training tower. This drill utilizes all the skills our firefighters have; from taking
command, to pumping with our trucks, to search and rescue and fire extinguishment. We are
able to give our firefighters a more realistic, but controlled environment to practice the skills we
train on all year. We analyze and review this drill to find our strengths and weaknesses. This
way we can adjust our training the next year so that our live firefighting skills stay where they
need to be to protect our community.
This year we placed our newer officers in a first arriving officer scenario. This gives our
members the responsibility of managing an emergency while under more realistic stress. We
focused on search and rescue, fire attack, gaining a water supply, and pumping.
The end of our training year culminated with practicing several skills, such as reviewing
elevator emergencies, SCBA and turnout gear skills and familiarity, and our annual fitness
agility test. We did have several events that resulted in a change of plans, and a few drills were
combined in order to fulfill other training that became required. As usual, our members did a
great job during these drills, and were able to accommodate the needs of the department.
Throughout all of this, our members completed quarterly EMT training, and six of our members
are on the North Suburban Hazardous Materials Team which meets monthly. Our officers
