2018 Annual Report • Fire Department • St. Anthony Village, Minnesota

21 | P a g e

V. Community Involvement and
Outreach
By Firefighter Joe Benik
COMMUNITY INTERACTION
The Fire Department has many ways of interacting with the residents that it
serves. Most of these interactions though are during an emergent situation, whether it be a fire
or a medical event. In order to balance out these events, we enjoy and relish the times when we
can meet other community members when there is no emergency! It is our mission as the fire
department in the City of St. Anthony to assist people within our community when they need it
most. Whether it is a fire related incident or a medical incident, it is our job to help out the
community in as many ways as we can, and are trained for. Aside from this, we also pride
ourselves on how much we reach out to the community in other ways also. Whether it be
through a free blood pressure check at the station, a station tour, our Fire Department Open
House during fire prevention week, or even having the crew on duty read a children’s book at
the community center for Halloween! We want to interact with the public in times of non-
emergency situations. We have a few programs in place that can allow us to interact, help to
improve safety, and enrich the lives of the residents. These programs make an emergent
situation go a little smoother for those involved, or can help to keep an incident from escalating
through advanced warning and knowledge. A few of our community interaction programs
include Fire Station Tours, the File of Life Program, Home Safety Surveys, instructing CPR
courses at the fire station and also to all 9th grade Health classes at the High School each year.
Training community members in CPR helps our community continue to improve itself as a
Heart Safe Community as designated by the Minnesota Department of Health and The
American Heart Association. We also participate in Night To Unite with the Police Department.
