While trenching work can be done in frozen ground and it would be possible to place the drain tile
and backfill the trenches the risk of damageing irrigation lines and control wires is a potential
problem.
Plan Modifications
Though, we have provided Veit with a grading plan for the varsity field we still need to address the
ditch between the ball field and the practice field. Veit has expressed a concern over doing piece-
meal work and would like to have a plan which addresses all issues related to earthwork and grading
to minimize their mobilizations to the site. We also need to determine the relative costs for this work
and determine who is going to pay for these corrective measures. Additionally, the drainage swale
between the practice field and the Varsity Baseball field will reduce the width of the practice area
from 195 feet to approximately 180 feet. The narrower width was approved by Gary Palm the
Atheletic Director. This modification should allow us to provide a dainage swale that will stop most
off -site drainage on to the Varsity field.
Prior to the December 2, 2002 Veit had stripped the rejected topsoil from the practice field and had
begun to bring in replacement soil, this soil had not been screened and had pieces of brick and other
construction debris within its contents. They ceased operations and nothing has been done to date
to correct this matter.
Varsity Field Backstop
`D' Fence will begin adding the extension to the varsity field backstop. That work will probably
occur this week. They couldn't do this work earlier because they couldn't get their lift onto the
field and because they hadn't gotten the extension approved. This work was not in the original
plans but should have been. Despite that, the original bid would have included the cost for more
fence fabric and the City would have been paying for it anyway.
Hockey Rink & Basketball Court
URS will re -issue the drawings of the hockey boards and basketball court by December 20. The
only issue we have found on the basketball court layout is the striping. There should not be any
corrective cost's associated with these changes to the basketball court. Veit's subcontractor `D'
Fence is working on the fencing around the hockey rink this week. The changes to the boards
will be completed in this winter or next spring. The changes will include covering the existing
boards with pressure treated plywood and some changes to the player door's. URS is planning
on paying for the changes to the hockey boards.
Corrective Costs
It was interesting to note that a member of the City Council was present and he seemed to indicate
that the Park Board group has made some decisions on other projects which have cost additional
monies and that they really had no right to make these decisions and that they were actually a matter
