Parks Commission Meeting Minutes
April 10, 2000
Page 4
Jindra mentioned that the Commission has been attempting to locate an area for skateboarders to
use. In this respect, Jensen stated that he has spoken with the City of Shoreview, and was in -
formed that Shoreview's skateboarding area is located alongside the Community Center. Addi-
tionally, he stated that the City has had a good experience with that location. Jensen continued
by directing the Commission's attention to information concerning skateboard ramps and
accessories that he had obtained from a company. Jensen inquired of Mr. Kost the approximate
size of an area by the St. Anthony Community Center as depicted on the sketch. Mr. Kost
responded that the area is approximately 80 x 120 feet. Jensen responded that a 60 x 100 foot
skateboarding rink could be installed by the City (repaving, ramps, and any accessories) for
approximately $50,000.
In returning to the issue of the proposed fields for Central Park, Mr. Palm offered his suggestions
regarding the proposed fields as well as the existing fields. Discussion ensued regarding the
length of time the fields would be out of commission during the redevelopment. Mr. Kost stated
that the fields in Central Park would be lost to athletic competition for two seasons.
Zurbey asked what the Commission needed to do now to move this project forward. Mr. Kost
said that since the survey is 95% complete, his recommendation would be to narrow the options
regarding the specific types of facilities the Commission desires in the Park.
Mr. Palm mentioned the possibility of the City purchasing a resident's home that is located near
Central Park. Mr. Wagner offered that it was his understanding that when the resident was ready
to move, he would consider selling his home to the City at that time.
Jindra mentioned that the Commission's joint meeting with the City Council would be
forthcoming in June and that these issues would be excellent topics for discussion.
Jindra confirmed that Mr. Kost would be in attendance at the next Parks Commission meeting on
May 8, 2000 and asked him to provide more details regarding Central Park at that time.
In respect to skateboarding, Wagner suggested at least a temporary place for the skateboarders.
School Board Representative Denise Dunn stated that she had found out some information re -
garding potential skateboarding at the school. Apparently, there is an agreement that once the
busses leave the school, the kids can skateboard in that area in front of the school. However, the
area behind the bleachers of the football stadium would not be available for skateboarding this
summer (as had been previously discussed) because of the work being performed on the bleach -
ers.
Zurbey mentioned the possibility of the upper parking area for skateboarding. Dunn requested
that the Commission determine a specific request that could be provided to the School Board.
In reference to the skateboarding materials obtained, Jensen inquired of the Commission the
types of questions in which to ask the Company about the ramps and accessories. It was decided
that Jensen would inquire if the ramps could be temporarily installed and have the ability to be
