Resolution 19-062; a Resolution Endorsing Pollinator Protection and Promoting 18
Pollinator Habitat. 19
20
Parks and Environmental Commission Chair Erin Jordahl Redlin reviewed at the March 4, 2019 21
Parks and Environmental Commission meeting the Executive Director of Pollinator Friendly 22
Alliance presented on pollinator protections. Recommendations were then discussed at the 23
Commission’s June 10, 2019 meeting. At the July 16, 2019 City Council work session, a draft 24
pollinator protection resolution was discussed. Similar resolutions have been adopted by other 25
Cities. It was noted that endorsing pollinator protection and promoting pollinator habitat 26
includes a commitment to avoid using neonicotinoid pesticides and pesticide treated plants. 27
Neonicotinoids are considered systemic pesticides. Systemic pesticides or insecticides are 28
chemicals that are actually absorbed by a plant when applied to seeds, soil, or leaves. The 29
chemicals then circulate through the plant’s tissues, killing the insects that feed on them. Unlike 30
with traditional insecticides, neonicotinoids cannot be washed or peeled off systemic pesticide 31
residues. 32
33
Chair Jordahl Redlin presented Resolution 19-062; a Resolution to Endorse Pollinator Protection 34
and Promoting Pollinator Habitat for Council consideration. 35
36
Councilmember Jenson stated he appreciates the Commission putting together ideas and bringing 37
them forward as it keeps the City on the sustainability path. 38
39
Motion by Councilmember Stille, seconded by Councilmember Gray, to approve Resolution 19-40
062; a Resolution to Endorse Pollinator Protection and Promoting Pollinator Habitat. 41
42
Motion carried 5-0. 43
44
B. 2020 Budget Presentation. 45
46
4
