Parks and Environmental Commission Regular Meeting Minutes <br />September 9, 2019 <br />Page 7 <br /> <br />Ms. Lona Doolan and Beth Rehfuss stated the grant opportunity was through the wellness 1 <br />group at the high school. She reviewed the Youth Environmental Stewardship Grant 2 <br />($18,500). The focus of the grant is to increase environmental awareness. This will expand the 3 <br />curriculum at the school with the addition of an Environmental Science course. They will be 4 <br />collaborating with the Parks and Environmental Commission. There will be an application 5 <br />process for students to apply. 6 <br /> 7 <br />Ms. Palmer thanked Ms. Doolan for her work on this and asked if this is renewed year after 8 <br />year and Ms. Doolan stated after the first year there are opportunities for further grants. 9 <br /> 10 <br />Commissioner Overman asked about the solar display and Ms. Doolan mentioned a project 11 <br />done in Elk River. 12 <br /> 13 <br />Chair Jordahl Redlin asked about liability if someone were to get hurt around the solar 14 <br />display. Mr. Gumke stated it would be covered under the insurance policy. The City Council 15 <br />would need to make the final decision on that display. 16 <br /> 17 <br />Ms. Doolan stated an additional grant was received for recycling at Wilshire Park. 18 <br /> 19 <br />G. Citizens for Sustainability Updates 20 <br /> 21 <br />Ms. Lona Doolan provided a power point presentation including Community Outreach, What 22 <br />we Heard, and a Look at 2020. Ms. Doolan reviewed data collected at VillageFest and Salo 23 <br />Park. CFS 2020 Priorities including Within Government, Within the Community, and Within 24 <br />the Schools were reviewed in detail. 25 <br /> 26 <br />Ms. Doolan noted she has enjoyed working with Minette this past year. 27 <br /> 28 <br />Chair Jordahl Redlin asked who Nativity’s hauler is and Ms. Doolan stated Walter’s. Chair 29 <br />Jordahl Redlin asked if Ecology Club will be at Wilshire and Ms. Doolan stated it will begin 30 <br />and there is a flyer drafted. They are trying to find a teacher/leader. Ecology Club is for 31 <br />Grades 3 and 4. 32 <br /> 33 <br />VII. COMMISSION REPORTS 34 <br /> 35 <br />Mr. Gumke provided a report. At Silver Point Park the hockey rink has been removed and 36 <br />land will be leveled and a new temporary hockey rink will be constructed. Splash pads were 37 <br />closed on September 8. They were open from May 21 – September 8. On September 26, the 38 <br />City will be hosting a smart salting program for property managers. In 2020, the City will be 39 <br />working with Hennepin County Forestry on the Tree Canopy Grants. A tree inventory grant is 40 <br />the first step. 41 <br /> 42 <br />Ms. Carre’ stated she has a meeting with the new science teacher next week. She is hoping to 43 <br />merge Green Team with Key Club and NHS. 44 <br /> 45
