2020 Annual Report • Fire Department • St. Anthony Village, Minnesota

9 | Page

III. Fire Code Activities
FIRE MARSHAL ACTIVITIES
By. Asst. Chief Chris Fuller
The numbers/statistics in this report are taken right from the Image
Trend™ Software and from reports issued by the Minnesota State Fire
Marshal’s Office.

FIRE CODE
The new Minnesota State Fire Code is in effect and new code books have been acquired. The
Minnesota State Fire code is the law and local jurisdictions can amend it as long as the
amendments are at least as restrictive. There are several areas of the code that leave some
decisions up to the local AHJ, Authority Having Jurisdiction.

TRAINING
All full-time fire department staff have state Fire Inspector I certification. The staff gets
continuing education throughout the year provided by local & state assistance. I attended
various training sessions and also serve on the Fire Marshals of Minnesota board as the
treasurer. Due to the pandemic the State Fire Marshal’s office did not offer code update classes
– we expect them to be offered this year to highlight the differences with the new code. To my
knowledge there were no changes that will have a major impact especially on existing
buildings.

PERMITS
Construction plans are reviewed to ensure compliance with state and national codes in the area
of site plans, fire alarm systems, fire sprinkler systems, egress plans, hazardous operations,
construction and operational plans. Several remodels were reviewed for compliance and
approved. Larger projects were delayed but some of the plans have been submitted and
reviewed. Concept or site plans were also reviewed on proposed projects.
