2020 Annual Report • Fire Department • St. Anthony Village, Minnesota

10 | Page

INSPECTIONS
Inspections of buildings and facilities are conducted to ensure compliance with state and
national codes and standards. These inspections include general fire prevention inspections and
inspections of specific systems and services. The specific inspections involve fire protection
systems including commercial hood suppression systems, fire alarm systems and fire sprinkler
systems.
All businesses are inspected every 2 years with the exception of apartment buildings which are
done every year. Inspections were done in a timely fashion and violations were corrected. No
major violations or concerns were brought to me.

RECREATIONAL FIRE PERMITS
Nothing new to report – program working well. Concerns of hazards of smoke from campfires
is an issue that is being discussed. I have heard of no jurisdiction taking action to ban them as
of yet. I will continue to monitor the situation and report any concerns or recommendations. In
the coming year we will be moving over to the new permit system for these.

FIRE INVESTIGATIONS
Fire cause determination is also a function of the Fire Marshal position. Currently Capt. Basara
and Lt. Jaros have completed the state’s training for investigation. Several others, including
myself, have received fire cause determination training from different agencies – Technical
Colleges, private agencies. I also currently belong to the MN IAAI. All full time personnel have
completed on-line training on Fire Investigation for Fire Officers. This class is offered for free
by the International Association of Arson Investigators.

In 2020, we had 6 incidents involving fire that resulted in at least $100 in Fire Loss.
