2020 Annual Report • Fire Department • St. Anthony Village, Minnesota

18 | Page

On a typical year, we reach several thousand people with our educational teachings. We visit
every student in St. Anthony from Kindergarten to High School. Each age group has a specific
message that is tailored to their learning level. We find this important to build on the messages
from year to year. This allows each student a solid foundation of fire safety throughout their
education. In Kindergarten, we visit the classrooms several times each year to talk about things
such as their first fire drill and read to them a fire safety
book. This allows them to get to know us and ask any (and
all) questions they may have regarding fire safety. Then in
first grade, we go more in-depth discussing smoke alarms
and showing them our firefighting gear.

We discuss the importance of sleeping with your door closed to keep out smoke and what to do
if there is a fire in their home.

In second grade, they are given a project of creating a safe escape plan for home. This is done
with their family to determine a family meeting place and two ways out of their bedroom. They
also go around their home and mark on their home-made plan, where all the smoke alarms are
located in their home. We come back to class and look over all the plans and stamp them with
