2020 Annual Report • Fire Department • St. Anthony Village, Minnesota <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />18 | Page <br /> <br />On a typical year, we reach several thousand people with our educational teachings. We visit <br />every student in St. Anthony from Kindergarten to High School. Each age group has a specific <br />message that is tailored to their learning level. We find this important to build on the messages <br />from year to year. This allows each student a solid foundation of fire safety throughout their <br />education. In Kindergarten, we visit the classrooms several times each year to talk about things <br />such as their first fire drill and read to them a fire safety <br />book. This allows them to get to know us and ask any (and <br />all) questions they may have regarding fire safety. Then in <br />first grade, we go more in-depth discussing smoke alarms <br />and showing them our firefighting gear. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />We discuss the importance of sleeping with your door closed to keep out smoke and what to do <br />if there is a fire in their home. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />In second grade, they are given a project of creating a safe escape plan for home. This is done <br />with their family to determine a family meeting place and two ways out of their bedroom. They <br />also go around their home and mark on their home-made plan, where all the smoke alarms are <br />located in their home.
