In third grade, they are given the opportunity to practice their escape plans when we bring the safe escape house to their school. We walk room to room with them and discuss different fire and safety hazards throughout the home. When they get to the final room, the bedroom, we use theatrical smoke to activate a smoke alarm for them to practice getting out of their room safely. Fourth grade is when we go in-depth on the science behind fire. We bring several props in to talk about fire dynamics and educate of how to extinguish a fire. In fifth grade, they are given the opportunity to participate in the Fire Prevention Poster Contest. Each student is given the task of creating a poster with a specific fire safety theme. This past year’s theme was “Serve up Fire Safety in the Kitchen.” We narrow the posters down to four and the top two go onto the state competition. The past two years St. Anthony students have won the state competition and had their safety poster featured on the front cover of a magazine. Outside the schools we do many additional classes, such as hands only CPR classes, babysitter’s classes, fire extinguisher classes or presentations to senior citizens regarding special hazards they are prone to such as falls. Our biggest event of the year is our Open House which we host annually in October. We have many activities for families to come and enjoy. This is a great opportunity to learn about various safety messages, see the fire trucks and station, and meet the firefighters that serve the community. In 2019, we had over 600 people attend our Open House. With COVID- 19 restrictions, we were unable to host one in 2020. However, this just means we are even more looking forward to 2021’s Open House.
