2020 Annual Report • Fire Department • St. Anthony Village, Minnesota

26 | Page

Our fall drills are used to focus on preparing for our live-fire training. We review skills and
practice with our crews so that we can use the limited time at the live-fire facility effectively.
We were able to use the East Metro Training facility for the first time. The facility uses natural
gas and theatrical smoke to create an environment where scenarios are conducted and reset
time is minimized. Our goal was to run through a room and
contents fire scenario with one crew and focusing on using
our hose deploying techniques. The location of this facility
does create some challenges due to its distance from our
city.
The next drill was used to create some priorities for our drills in 2021. This time was a good
review of things that worked and things we need to work on after experiencing our live fire
drill.
As members of the North Suburban Hazardous Materials Team, we were able to use the team's
decontamination/equipment trailer for one of our last in-person drills of the year. We were able
to review the equipment that would be used during a hazardous materials incident. The
equipment included lighting, decontamination showers, and various enclosures that are used
during cold weather incidents. Our NSHM team members helped with instructing our
members on the set-up and use of this equipment.
Our last drill of the year was a review of carbon monoxide calls and our hazardous
materials monitoring equipment.
2020 brought with it a number of challenges for many departments. While we needed to
shift our training plans continually, we do believe that the training we were able to complete
furthered our abilities and continued to solidify our
growing skillset. As safety concerns dissipate, we
hope to be able to move forward with more hands-
on training as well as working together in our crews
again. We are hoping to utilize some of the unique
lessons from 2020 and fold them into our training
going forward.
