Parks and Environmental Commission Regular Meeting Minutes
September 13, 2021
Page 5
Chair Bellinger asked about dedicated fields and asked if Mr. Gillard sees courts that are
striped for both pickleball and tennis. Ms. Chaplin stated the person that got the program
rolling in Shoreview got the City Manager on his side. The City Manager went to bat at
making dedicated courts. The tennis courts behind the Community Center had 4 courts striped
for pickleball. The tennis players hated it. The neighbors had concerns because pickleball is
louder than tennis. Chair Bellinger asked if it worked better to have dedicated courts and Ms.
Chaplin stated it is a much greater draw for players to come to dedicated courts as there is no
set-up required with proper net height and one set of lines.

Commissioner Guest asked how many players are on a team and Mr. Gillard stated typically
there are two players to a team. There would be 20 people most likely on a set of pickleball
courts.

Chair Bellinger stated what are the downsides other than noise. She asked if it is more
demanding for parking. Mr. Gillard stated it would depend on where people are coming from.
Ms. Chaplin stated there is a big demand for parking. Vadnais Heights constructed 6
dedicated pickleball courts with only room for 12 cars in the parking area.

Mr. Rich Fise has lived in St. Anthony for 35 years. He is proud of the parks in the City. He
does not believe the Culver Courts are up to the standards that St. Anthony has for their parks.
He clarified the lines that are put at Silver Lake Road and 33rd, the temporary lines, take a lot
of time to put on. He believes in terms of parking at Culver Court there are really only two
dedicated parking places and there is street parking and a huge parking lot at Goodyear.

VI.COMMISSION REPORTS

Ms. Palmer stated for the stadium complex it has been in use. The formal inauguration will be
held September 17 at the Husky Football Game at 7:00 p.m.

VII.OTHER BUSINESS

2021 Meeting Dates

The list of 2021 Parks and Environmental Commission Meetings which occur quarterly on the
first Monday of the month unless noted, will begin at 7:00 p.m. at the City Hall Council
Chambers.

December 6, 2021

A.40 Options to Dedicate Silver Lane Tennis Courts to Pickleball Courts

Public Works Director Jeremy Gumke reviewed St. Anthony has experienced a growing
interest in Pickleball and the Parks & Environmental Commission has been presented with
updates on the topic. At its previous regular meeting on June 7, 2021, the Commission asked
staff to bring forward options for dedicating the Silver Lane courts currently configured for a
single Tennis court and shared with striping for two Pickleball courts with movable nets.
