Parks and Environmental Commission Regular Meeting Minutes
June 5, 2023
Page 5
1 Poor condition of many pathways & trails.
2 Mostly fairly clean parks.
3 Lots of green spaces, but underutilization of non-athletic green spaces.
4
5 Good Things:
6 Infrastructure (picnic shelters, playgrounds) was overall good.
7 Lots of greenery (trees, landscaping, foliage)
8 Play equipment has aged well, except for skate park and Central splash pad.
9
10 Challenging:
11 Lack of well-designed pathways and accessibility.
12 Unused space (e.g. ice arena and hockey space)
13 Optimization of seasonal usage of parks & spaces.
14 Overgrown plants/maintenance of gardens (ideal would be for low-maintenance
15 plantings and city would do base upkeep, while garden club can help to beautify).
16
17 Opportunities:
18 Consider new park area(s) when commercial area around Kenzie Terrace is
19 redeveloped.
20 Solar arrays on structures, i.e. CP Pavilion, storage tank, etc.
21 Underutilized green spaces, lack of bike racks in most parks, need more lighting in
22 Emerald, no good basketball court.
23
24 Themes:
25 Improve on safety, walkability and accessibility.
26 Improve moveability between parks and within parks.
27 Increase benches and picnic tables.
28 Improve water management & grading issues on trails (i.e. puddles, ice build up).
29
30 Shorter Term Requests for 2024-2025 CIP:
31 Replace plantings with native, drought resistant, low maintenance plantings and weed
32 barriers.
33 Refresh and add recycling and trash receptacles with better markings.
34 Add accessible picnic tables and add benches throughout the parks.
35 Repair of aged trails and concrete throughout the parks.
36 De-prioritize playground structure upgrades or replacements.
37
38 Longer Term CIP/Planning Thoughts:
39 Accessibility, inclusivity, and equity as a theme for all park spaces.
