Background on the treatment c/o Paul Kretsch,Lake Restoration:
The proposed treatment of Eurasian Watermilfoil(EWM)with Fluridone is a whole-lake treatment
targeting ALL milfoil growth in Silver Lake.Fluridone is safe for people, pets, wildlife and fish
and carries no water-use restrictions at the proposed application rate of 2-4 parts per
billion(ppb). The reason for this treatment proposal is that EWM growth has impacted over 40%
of the lake in recent years. The DNR typically only allows us to treat up to 15%of the lake for
invasive species. If there is approval for this whole-lake treatment,we will work with the DNR on
a variance letter to allow whole-lake treatment.
Whole lake fluridone treatment will:
●Be applied early in the season(May)and work to inhibit the photosynthesis of EWM,
limiting growth.
●Provide complete control of all EWM within the treated water. No active EWM growth in
Silver Lake by 60-90days post treatment.
●Selectively control Eurasian Watermilfoil, while having minimal/no impact on native plant
growth.
Whole lake fluridone treatment will not:
●Impact algae growth
●Impact water clarity
●Impact fish/wildlife/invertebrates
Definitions related to the proposal:
Thermocline:Boundary layer above which is general mixed and moving water, below which is
cold dense water. The water above and below the thermocline do not mix with eachother.
Rice creek Watershed District observed a thermocline at 10-15feet starting in May last year.
Epilimnion(epilimnetic):The volume of water above the thermocline.
This is ~70%of the water in Silver Lake
The proposal is based on the likelihood of observing a thermocline again in 2024,and only
needing to treat ~70%of the water. It is possible for whole-lake mixing to occur which would
necessitate us using ~30%more fluridone to achieve the desired dose. The proposal outlines a
cost of $21.00 /oz fluridone beyond the scoped delivery. This would be necessary in the
scenario of whole-lake mixing, and could add $2,500+to the delivered cost of the treatment
beyond the $11,470.(Not expected).
This is a very good management proposal for high occurrence of EWM.It has been discussed
with the MN DNR,Rice Creek Watershed District,Three Rivers Park District,Silver Lake
Association,and Lake Restoration.
