Tuesday, April 30, 2024

Charlie Yunker
City of St. Anthony
3301 Silver Lake Road
St. Anthony, MN 55418

Dear Charlie,

I am contacting you on behalf of the Mounds View Irondale Youth Hockey Association (MVI) to
discuss a matter of great importance and mutual benefit concerning the future of hockey and
community engagement within our communities. Over the past 25 years, the Super Rink has
been a beacon of athletic excellence and community engagement, serving as a crucial facility
for MVI Youth Hockey, our high schools, and various ice sports programs. Annually, MVI utilizes
800+ hours of ice time for teams to practice and play at the Super Rink. In addition, we host
two tournaments using nearly 600 additional hours. Access to the Super R ink is essential to
our growing association; in the 2023-2024 season, we exceeded 750 players from more than
450 families in our 8-city footprint. As we look toward the future, we are eager to embark on a
new phase of development and enhancement of this c herished facility.

The Super Rink, constructed 27 years ago for $22 million in two phases, now needs major
capital improvement renovations. These upgrades are critical for the facility’s continued
operation and ensure that it meets modern standards and can serve our communit y well into the
future. The proposed renovations include converting the ice plant from R -22 to ammonia and
installing new floors, boards, sound systems, scoreboards, LED lights, and other efficiencies.
The estimated cost for these improvements is $12 milli on, and Super Rink is asking MVI for
$750,000 to support these renovations.

Historically, the Super Rink has operated without additional funding or subsidy, thanks to
revenue from private ice rentals, in -house programs, hospitality, and sponsorship. However,
given the scale of these required improvements, Super Rink is seeking fin ancial support from
our communities, which are the primary Super Rink residents and will benefit most from these
necessary renovations.

Therefore, in alignment with their past practices and proven financial model, we ask for
monetary support from our city governments within the MVI footprint to support these capital
upgrades, ensuring our access to ice for another 25 years. The Super Rink ’s other association
partners, Blaine Youth Hockey Association and Centennial Youth Hockey Association, have
agreed to do the same with their municipal government partners.
