PAGE | 1 OF 1
MEMORANDUM
To:St. Anthony Village Parks and Environmental Commission
From:Ashley Morello, Assistant City Manager
Date:December 2, 2024 Parks & Environmental Commission Work Session
Request:Identify ideal conditions of a dog park
BACKGROUND
The Parks and Environmental Commission has expressed interest historically in a dog park within the
city. At the September 23, 2024 PEC meeting, there was some discussion regarding pursuing a dog park.
A dog park has been an ongoing topic for the PEC. During the September 12, 2022 PEC meeting, the
Commission discussed the feasibility of a dog park in Saint Anthony. The group discussed a report from
Ann Arbor, MI (attached) which included recommendations for dog park site planning. Staff has also
attached an additional dog park guidelines resource from The Trust for Public Land.
Staff is recommending the PEC define what the ideal conditions and characteristics of a dog park would
be to them and Saint Anthony residents. Understanding ideal conditions for a city dog park is a critical
step in the planning process. At a high level, the PEC should identify at least the following:
Who is the dog park for?
How will people and their dogs travel to the park?
What is the appropriate size to accommodate dogs of all sizes?
What surrounding land uses are compatible with dog parks?
What is missing from neighboring communities’ dog parks?
Who will maintain the park?
What amenities are key?
o Amenities could include lighting, fencing, double gate entry, shade, water access
ACTION
PEC to provide staff with input on key features that are necessary for a successful dog park within the
city.
ATTACHMENTS:
Ann Arbor Report
Trust Guidelines
