Fibers, such as newspa-
-per and cardboard, must be sorted from plas-
tic, glass and aluminum. The single -sort sys-
tem would require no separation of recy-
clables; they could all be thrown into one
bin'.
The single -sort system is easier for resi-
dents to use, said City Sanitarian David
Fridgen. Studies show that its convenience
usually raises recycling participation rates,
which currently hover around 55 percent to
60 percent in New Brighton, he said.
But the single -sort system is more expen-
sive than double -sort. Eventually the recy-
clables must be separated, and someone
must be paid to perform the job. And though
statistics vary widely, the single -sort system
has been- shown to cause more waste prod-
ucts, since people inevitably `throw inappro-
priate objects into the bins,' contaminating
.other items. rouble -sort systems have a
waste product rate of less than 5 percent, .
F on said. Single -sort systems, on the
o r hand, have a waste product rate rang-
