It's a no-brainer."
Kruckenberg. said that since Shoreview
implemented the single -sort system about a
year ago, the city's recycling tonnage has
increased almost 30 percent, from 220 tons a
month on average to 290 tons. And recy-
cling participation rates have increased from
-64 percent to 92 percent:
"It encourages people to do - the right
thing," he said.
He said he thinks the waste product rates
associated with the single -sort system will
eventually lower. The industry will have to
adapt, but educational efforts will help. Resi-
dents need to be informed. of what is appro-
priate to place in a single -sort recycling bin.
In the meantime, Shoreview residents are
happy with the city's new program. Surveys
have shown very positive responses, Kruck-
enberg said.
It pays to recycle,
New Brighton is also considering a
shared -revenue recycling program.. Uiider
the program, if recyclable materials are sell-
ing well in the market, the city w0uld share
in some of the hauler's profits.
Fridgen said he assumes there would be a
trade-off to such a system. If the market was
bad for recyclable materials, the. city Vinay
have to share some of the hauler's costs.
New Brighton's recycling contract with
Waste Management is set to expire at the
encs. of the year. City staff are- currently
developing requests for proposals to send
out to haulers, seeking to compare industry
prices between single -sort and double -sort
recycling systems and revenue-sharing pro-
grams.
53
