Recycling Containers Storage 25 There has been a change in the city code concerning where garbage cans are allowed to be stored Tl�e old code stated that garbage cans were to be stored out of view from the street and adjoining properties. That meant that garbage cans needed to be stored in a garage or screened in such a way that cans were not visible from the street or from a neighbor's property. This code was difficult to enforce and was even more difficult to comply with. The new code allows outside storage containers and single sort recycling containers to be stored next to a garage or house as long as those containers are not stored past the front edge of the house. The code allows for storage of containers on the front side of the house if the containers are kept in an enclosure or screened from the street. The new code provides for more flexibility when storing garage containers and single sort recycling containers. Single sort recycling just may be the easiest and most convenient recycling system available. Residents will no longer have to sort plastics, glass, and aluminum from fibers (paper, cardboard, boxboard). All these recyclable will now be placed in one convenient cart that can be wheeled to the curb. The lid is grey, making it easy to iden- tify and the lid label explains what can and cannot be recycled. Cart distribution began in late December and will continue in early January lentil completed. Door hangers will be attached to the. carts. The hanger includes the recycling schedule, so please hold onto it for future reference. Rest assured, your recyclables will be recycled ... BFI/Allied Waste will do the sorting for you at their facility. The first recycling pick up under the new system will begin the week of January 9, 2006. Your recycling is picked up the same day as your garbage. Be sure to have your recycling cart out at the curb (at least 3 feet away from your garbage can) by 6.- 3 0 a.m. on our pick up day. BFI/Allied Waste will NOT be collecting the old curbside bins - please reuse them in other ways - they make great storage containers. BFI/Allied Waste has a contract with the city up until March 31, 2008. Residents will pay $3.30/mo. per household for the single sort service. This is a $:98 increase from the- previous two sort recycling system rate of $2.32/mo. But the single sort system will be more convenient for residents and the city hopes to see an increase in recycling tonnage. BFI/Allied Waste will pickup Christmas trees curbside the weeks of January 3 and January 16. Please place your tree curbside on your normal hauling pickup day by 6:30 a.m. If your tree is missed, please call 763-784-2104. Dispose of Household Hazardous Waste Properly The Anoka County Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Facility accepts hazardous wastes including acids, aerosol cans with product remaining, drain cleaner, driveway sealer, liquid paint, liquid mercury, mercury thermometers, oven cleaner, paint thinner, paint stripper, pesticides, pool chemicals, and wood preservatives. ~ Winter hours at the HHW facili are: :: _ ....
