2008 Summary of activities conducted by the Fire Marshal's office <br />Plan reviews are conducted to ensure compliance with state & national codes in <br />regards to site plans, fire alarm plans, sprinkler system plans, egress plans, <br />hazardous operations, construction and operational plans. This office conducted 29 <br />plan reviews that involved 32:59 staff hours. <br />Inspections of buildings and facilities are also conducted to ensure compliance with <br />state & national codes. These inspections cover general inspections and specific <br />inspections to systems and services. These specific inspections involve fire <br />protection systems including hood extinguishing systems, fire alarm systems and <br />sprinkler systems. This office conducted 26 inspections that involved 17:22 staff <br />hours. <br />As a result of the initial building and facilities inspection, follow-up inspections were <br />required at several locations. 36 follow-up inspections were conducted that <br />involved 14:31 staff hours. <br />During the course of building and facilities inspections, the Fire Marshal's office <br />attempts to verify businesses comply with the City's Certificate of Occupancy <br />requirements. 20 City Certificate of Occupancy inspections were conducted <br />involving 8:27 staff hours. <br />The Fire Marshal's office receives request for information from building contractors, <br />architects, designers, the general public and others regarding various aspects of the <br />fire code. There were 8 consultations involving 3:19 staff hours. <br />The Fire Marshal's office issued 157campfire permits in 2008. <br />The Fire Marshal's office strives to gain compliance with the fire code through a <br />cooperative alliance with the community. As a result, out of all the inspections and <br />follow-up inspections, only 3 legal notices and citations were issued in 2008. <br />The Fire Marshal's office is responsible for the Fire Prevention and Public Education <br />program. This program consists of community fire prevention education, fire <br />prevention education in the schools, fire prevention education for businesses, fire <br />stations tours among other items. A total of 191 adults and 1276 children received <br />a fire prevention message in 2008. <br />All full-time fire department staff are certified at the Fire Inspector I level. Several staff <br />have certified at higher levels. These staff receives continuing education annually to <br />maintain this certification. The City Fire Marshal has attended monthly <br />meetings/educational sessions as part of the North Suburban Fire Marshal's <br />Association. The City Fire Marshal has also attended specialized educational <br />sessions conducted by the Minnesota State Fire Marshal. The City Fire Marshal <br />participated in 71:15 of continuing education, meetings and educational <br />sessions during his off-duty time in 2008. <br />
