34 <br />Summary of 2009 Fire Marshal activities <br />TRAINING <br />All full-time fire department staff are certified at the Fire Inspector I level. Several staff <br />have been certified at higher levels. These staff receive continuing education throughout <br />the year provided by local, state & federal assistance. <br />The Fire Marshal has attended monthly meetings/educational sessions as part of the <br />North Suburban Fire Marshal's Association. The Fire Marshal has also attended <br />specialized educational sessions conducted by the Minnesota State Fire Marshal. <br />The Fire Marshal participated in 81:30 hrs of continuing education, meetings and <br />educational sessions during off-duty time in 2009. <br />PUBLIC EDUCATION <br />The Fire Marshal is responsible for the Fire Prevention and Public Education program. <br />This program consists of community fire prevention education, fire prevention education <br />in the schools, fire prevention education for businesses, the fire safety poster contest <br />and fire station tours, among other items. <br />A total of 421 adults and 923 children received a fire prevention message in 2009. <br />CAMPFIRE PERMITS <br />The Fire Marshal's office issues campfire permits to ensure fire safety conditions are <br />met and pollution issues are minimized. <br />The Fire Marshal's office issued 170 campfire permits in 2009. <br />FIRE CODE ACTIVITIES <br />Construction plans are reviewed to ensure compliance with state and national codes <br />in regards to site plans, fire alarm plans, sprinkler system plans, egress plans, <br />hazardous operations, construction and operational plans. <br />The Fire Marshal conducted 36 plan reviews that involved 64:00 hrs of staff time. <br />Inspections of buildings and facilities are also conducted to ensure compliance with <br />state & national codes. These inspections cover general inspections and specific <br />inspections to systems and services. These specific inspections involve fire protection <br />systems including restaurant hood extinguishing systems, fire alarm systems and fire <br />sprinkler systems. <br />The Fire Marshal & Inspectors conducted 173 inspections entailing 94:40 hrs of <br />staff time. <br />As a result of the initial building & facilities inspection, follow-up inspections were <br />required. <br />107 follow-up inspections were conducted requiring 47:31 hrs of staff time. <br />During the course of the building and facilities inspections, the Fire Marshal's office <br />attempts to verify that businesses comply with the City's Certificate of Occupancy <br />requirements. <br />13 Certificate of Occupancy inspections were conducted in 2009. <br />
