0 <br />PAGE 2 - <br />DURING THE YEARS OF 1955 AND 1956 BERGER HAULED THE MAJORITY OF <br />THE STORE FIXTURES INTO SOUTHDALE SHOPPING CENTER FROM LOS ANGELES. <br />AS SOUTHDALE WAS THE FIRST INDOOR MALL SHOPPING CENTER IN THE <br />UNITED STATES THE COORDINATION OF THE DELIVERIES WAS VERY IMPORTANT <br />AS IT WAS WATCHED BY MANY DIFFERENT PEOPLE AND FIRMS. <br />BY SUCCESFULLY HANDLING THIS JOB IT ENABLED THE COMPANY TO BECOME <br />INVOLVED IN THE TRUCK LOAD BUSINESS WHICH MAKES UP A LARGE PORTION <br />OF THE BUSINESS TO THIS DAY. <br />-�� DURING OCTOBER OF,1959 BERGER WAS GIVEN 90 DAYS NOTICE TO BE OUT OF <br />ITS LOCATION ON LINCOLN STREET BECAUSE OF THE PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION <br />OF 35W. LAND WAS PURCHASED ON MACALASTER DR. AND CONTRUCTION WAS <br />ALMOST COMPLETED IN TIME. THE MOVE TOOK PLACE ON JANUARY 22, 1960. <br />THE ONLY THING NOT READY WAS.THE OFFICE, INCLUDING HEAT. 'TEMPORARY <br />ELECTRICTY AND PHONES WERE SET UP TO ALLOW THE COMPANY TO OPERATE. <br />IN THE SPRING WHEN THE FROST CAME OUT OF THE GROUND IT WAS NECESSARY <br />TO HAVE EACH OF THE TRUCKS WENCHED BETWEEN 37TH AND THE WAREHOUSE <br />DOCK FOR LOADING AND UNLOADING. THINGS FINALLY DRIED OUT SO A ROAD <br />COULD BE BUILT AND THINGS GOTTEN BACK TO NORMAL. <br />AT THE TIME OF THIS MOVE BERGER OWNED FOUR TRACTORS, FOUR STRAIGHT <br />TRUCKS AND TWELVE TRAILORS. <br />ON NOVEMBER 25, 1960 BERGER BECAME AN AGENT FOR GLOBAL VAN LINES <br />GIVING IT ADDITIONAL CAPABILITIES IN TI3E HANDLING OF HOUSEHOLD GOODS. <br />DURING THE FIRST YEAR WITH GLOBAL THE BERGER BOOKINGS WITH THE VAN <br />LINE WERE ONLY $17,000. IN 1966 BERGER WAS THE LARGEST BOOKING OFFICE <br />OF GLOBAL VAN LINES. <br />DURING THE 1960'S MANY OF THE FURNITURE MANUFACURERS IN THE TWIN <br />CITIES WENT OUT OF BUSINESS OR MOVED TO THE CAROLINA'S. IN ORDER <br />TO CONTINUE TO GROW THE BUSINESS BERGER BEGAN TO MOVE HIGH VALUE <br />PRODUCTS SUCH AS COMPUTERS, MEDICAL EQUIPMENT, COPY MACHINES, AND <br />LARGE CAMERAS. <br />BERGER WAS A PIONEER IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF FLAT FLOOR ELECTRONIC <br />TRAILERS, AIR RIDE SUSPENSION, CLIMATE CONTROLLED TRAILERS, AND <br />MANY MATERIAL HANDLING ITEMS USED IN THE MOVEMENT OF THESE PRODUCTS. <br />4 <br />
