It advised, in part: An underpass
Intersection or overpass at Snelling and Larpenteur would create a very serious
hardship upon them and other merchants in the area. If it is not
withheld, they would have to take means of canceling their lease
and close their store. This would create additional hardships on
the community because there would be an additional burden of taxes
to the home owner.
Letter of January 23rd, from D. 0. Julep, Secretary of the Larpen-
teur Snelling Shopping Center, was read. It advised that Gray
Drugs and Applebaums' Food Market will have to break their leases
and move out if the underpass or overpass is constructed at
Larpenteur and Snelling. They are their two largest tenants and
if they were to lose them, they may as well close their buildings
as they couldn't afford to continue business.
Office C. Simon, Mrs. Gerald Johnson, Mrs. Henry Ernst and hors.
fiiomen Voters T. A. Salminen. There was a general conversation during which
Mayor Nilsen expressed his regret that the League did not hold
it's usual Candidates Meeting in 1960. He feels this is a real
service to the community in that it gives the public and the candi-
dates a chance to meet each other and discuss the pertinent issues,
P~Irs. Ernst expressed her regret that they hadn't had one but said
it was the feeling of most of their board that there had been so
many political meetings due to the Primary and Final Elections
that they doubted a League Candidates' Meeting before the Village
Election would be attended by very many people. She would, however,
make a motion that they have a Candidates' Meeting before the next
Village Election.
Mrs. Weigel brought out the fact that while the League Members
retain their identity as individual voters, they do not, as a
group, back arty candidate. They support issues. Members of the
Board are not permitted to work for any particular candidate
