of <br />CITY OF HUGO <br />COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT <br />Memorandum <br />TO: Parks, Recreation and Open Space Commission <br />FROM: Shayla Syverson, Parks Planner <br />DATE: October 13, 2010 <br />SUBJECT: Health Sub -Committee <br />BACKGROUND: <br />At the February 2, 2010 Parks Commission meeting, Dr. Aaron Arvig and Kathy Bystrom <br />made a presentation on the Hugo Health Fair. Arvig, owner of Oneka Chiropractic and <br />founder of the Hugo Health Fair gave a background of the fair. The Health Fair has <br />been held annually for five years and is made possible by a partnership of several <br />health-related businesses in Hugo. Dr. Arvig discussed expanding the Health Fair to <br />include an on-going community health initiative. Kathy Bystrom gave information on the <br />Statewide Health Improvement Program (SHIP), which could potentially fund a health <br />initiative. <br />A Health Sub -Committee was formed. Parks Commissioners Larsen, Schmidt and <br />Berger volunteered to serve on the Sub -Committee. The first meeting was held April 6. <br />2010. <br />At the May 17, 2010 meeting, the City Council discussed the formation of the Health <br />Sub -Committee to look into an on-going community health initiative and SHIP funding. <br />Staff was directed to represent the City of Hugo on the SHIP Community Leadership <br />Team of Washington County. <br />HEALTH SUB -COMMITTEE MEETINGS: <br />The Health Sub -Committee has met seven times. After several meetings of <br />brainstorming possible ways to utilize SHIP funding, the Sub -Committee established two <br />goals: <br />1. Initiate a series of active community events with health business partners in <br />Hugo. <br />2. Work with Washington County and apply for Statewide Health Improvement <br />Program Funds as they become available. <br />The primary goal is to plan healthy, safe events for Hugo families to encourage active <br />lifestyles and raise awareness. Out of this goal, the Sub -Committee would like to host a <br />family bike ride. Other options for events include a strongman competition, walking club, <br />
