and community health talks hosted by the clinics. This is likely to evolve into a "Healthy
Hugo" initiative.
WASHINGTON COUNTY COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP TEAM:
Staff has been attending the monthly meetings of the SHIP Washington County
Leadership Team. The Community Leadership Team oversees how SHIP funding is
allocated in Washington County. Their focus areas are:
■ School nutrition
■ Community physical activity
■ Community Nutrition Childcare
■ Community Nutrition Access
■ Worksite Comprehensive Wellness
■ Health Care Breastfeeding Support
■ Health Care Resource Referral System
Funding is only given for projects that result in POLICY changes or promotion of existing
policies. The majority of project ideas relate to City Planning.
Recently, Community Partner Project funding has become available. A pre -application
was submitted. An application will be submitted for a Healthy Hugo Initiative. Funding
would be used for community meetings, marketing, signage and possibly a website. The
Healthy Hugo Initiative would center on promoting walkability and other health-related
items in the City of Hugo Comprehensive Pan. This would be done through community
events such was the bike ride and community health talks, etc.
NEXT STEPS:
The Sub -Committee is meeting monthly to plan the family bike ride and would like to
hold it the last weekend in October or the first weekend in September of 2011. They will
plan marketing, contact potential partners, set a budget, find funding/ sponsorships and
coordinate entertainment and games.
The application for Community Partner Project funding will be submitted by October 29,
2010 pending approval by the City Council at their meeting of October 18, 2010.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends that the Parks Commission continue to have representation on the
Health Sub -Committee. Staff also recommends that the Parks Commission make a
recommendation to the City Council in support of an application for funding through the
SHIP Community Partner Project Funding.
ATTACHMENTS:
Community Partner Project Funding Request for Applications and Pre -Application
