Lions Park Master Planning Project
Page 2
5. Trails
a. Connections to existing trails, both city-wide and region -wide, are very important such as
connecting to the Heartland Trail.
b. The City owns property directly east of Highway 61 from City Hall and will likely have a
portion of this land become another open space or park area. Planning for a direct
connection to this area is important.
c. A trail loop within the park should also be planned for.
6. Park Entrance — Sense of Place
a. A signature entrance is desired. The entrance point from 147`h is the main focus, but
another park id sign should be considered from the south entrance as well.
7. Theme
a. An `old town / square' or French theme should be explored for one of the concepts.
b. The character of the park should tie into the City Hall building such as using some of the
same building materials. (i.e. brick, stone, colors; etc.)
8. Winter Appeal
a. There is still desire to have a covered general skating area. The shelter structure could
also serve as a picnic shelter / kitchen space / bandshell in the summer months.
9. General Comments:
a. The property to the west of the park should be considered for future park expansion
b. The space should be flexible so that it can accommodate smaller performances such as
weddings, concerts, etc. for groups of 200-1000 people.
c. The picnic shelter should be sized to accommodate family / company gatherings of 200+
people with support amenities such as picnic tables, grills, etc.
d. One concept should include space for a portable stage instead of a bandshell.
e. No backstop is needed.
f. Designated spaces for public art / sculptures should be incorporated.
g. The tennis and basketball courts are not used and can be removed from the park. This
item could be phased out over time should the park improvements be built in phases.
h. The existing ballfields can be removed. The City has other parks that support this need.
i. A green corridor should be created between the City Hall entrance and the park so it
creates a continuous connection.
j. Some type of water feature such as a splash pad in one concept and/or a sculptural
fountain in another concept should be included.
k. Strategically placed low maintenance landscape areas should be incorporated into the
plans.
H 41900.19➢b 00C&Ui Park-ftla S—Y da
