Application for Community Forest Bonding Grant City of Hugo February 2012 1. City of Hugo, Arbre Park Diverse Tree Planting 2. Project Purpose: Trees in Arbre Park in the City of Hugo will be replaced. As the residential neighborhood surrounding Arbre Park developed, there was an environmental impact that caused several of the mature trees in the park to die. The trees will be replaced with more diverse and hearty trees. As the population continues to grow, the City of Hugo Parks, Recreation and Open Space Commission works to provide adequate opportunities for outdoor recreation to its residents. Arbre Park is located in the busy family-oriented neighborhood of Victor Gardens where the parks are greatly valued and utilized. When the large, shade - providing mature trees were removed from Arbre Park, the residents of the neighborhood requested that they be replaced promptly with trees that would thrive at the park. The City of Hugo would like to take the opportunity to make tree replacements at Arbre Park that will enhance the overall diversity of the trees in the community. 3. Project Location Description Arbre Park is a two acre park located in a residential neighborhood in the City of Hugo. The public park property also includes features such as a basketball half -court, playground structure and ball field backstop. The property consists of mainly clay type soils with adequate amounts of topsoil on the surface layer. 4. Document Public Ownership An aerial photograph and location maps are attached. 5. Project Goals The City of Hugo Public Works Department will be planting the trees in Arbre Park with the assistance of local Boy Scouts. A youth working towards his Eagle Scout has offered to recruit volunteers to assist in planting of the trees and in clean up of the site. The Hugo Public Works Department will plant the trees following guidelines set in the document "American Standard for Nursery Stock" provided by the American Nursery and Landscape Association. This planting shall be conducted at the beginning of April 2012. They will continue to maintain and inspect the trees on a weekly basis, or more often as needed. Irrigation is available and will be adjusted to ensure proper watering.
