Demographic Trends/Forecasts
The population within the District is projected to increase from an estimate of 52,050 in 1996 to
55,818 in 2000. The majority of the population growth is expected in Hugo, Lino Lakes, and
North Oaks. The population age projections within the district are displayed in the following
forecast based on Metro Area trends.
The number of youth ages 0-14 (prime youth sports participants) will decline (4%) between 2000-2010.
The number of youth ages 15-24 will increase (28%) between 2000-2010.
The number of adults ages 25-34 (prime adult sports participants) will increase slightly (+i%) between
2000-2010.
The number of adults ages 3549 will decrease (-5%) between 2000 and 2010.
The number of adults ages 50-64 (active older adults) is forecast to increase (48%) between 2000 and
2010.
The number of adults ages 65-74 (active seniors) will increase (32%) between 2000 and 2010 and will
continue to increase for the next 25 years.
The number of adults ages 75+ (active seniors) will increase (8%) between 2000 and 2010.
'Metropolitan Council
Population Estimates and Forecasts
1996 2000 2010 t.,.,.a. #
Birchwood Village
1,027
970
940
Stable
Gem Lake
452
430
460
Stable
Hugo(624)*
1659
2634
5709
Growth
Lino Lakes(624)*
503
798
1267
Growth
North Oaks(624)*
450
694
1069
Growth
Vadnais Hgts. Within the growth areas, all age groups will require additional
facilities and programs.
In general, district -wide, the biggest population growth segments will be active older adults,
seniors and young adults. The expanding senior population will increase demand for facilities
such as indoor and outdoor walking areas and daytime gym space. The athletic facility needs
should focus on meeting the current shortfall in facilities for youth and adults, and the projected
shortages in respect to the growing areas.
ff[t?IOIIr, .
6
