SIZE OF FACILITY AND USE OF SPACE WITHIN LIBRARIL , — Although not absolutes, an accepted <br />benchmark for libraries based on the Kentucky Public Library Standards ( a common national <br />standard) is that facilities should have at least .6 square foot of space per capita, with excellent <br />libraries having 1.5 to 2 square feet of space per capita. Currently, the Washington County <br />Library would need to add approximately 30,000 square feet in the County to meet that basic <br />standard. <br />CURRENT: <br />2013 Washington County Library service area population: 204,310 <br />(not including Stillwater, Bayport, and Lake Elmo) <br />Total current library facility square footage at .41 sq. ft. per resident: 83,604 sq. ft. <br />Total square footage needed to achieve .6 sq. ft. per resident: 122,600 sq. ft. <br />(40,000 sq. ft. increase) <br />Total square footage needed to achieve 1 sq. ft. per resident: 204,310 sq. ft. <br />(121,000 sq. ft. increase) <br />Total square footage needed to achieve 1.5 sq. ft. per resident: 306,465 sq. ft. <br />(223,000 sq. ft. increase) <br />Based on project population increases, by 2040 the Library may need to add as much as 94,000 <br />square feet of space to meet the .6 sq. foot standard for adequate service and significantly <br />more to achieve higher standards. <br />2040 PROJECTIONS: <br />Washington County Library service area population expected in 2040: 294,810 <br />(not including Stillwater and Lake Elmo — does include Bayport) <br />Total square footage needed at current .41 level: 121,000 sq. ft. <br />(38,000 sq. ft. increase) <br />Total square footage needed to achieve .6 sq. ft. per resident: 177,000 sq. ft. <br />(94,000 sq. ft. increase) <br />Total square footage needed to achieve 1.0 sq. ft. per resident: 295,000 sq. ft. <br />(212,000 sq. ft. increase) <br />Total square footage needed to achieve 1.5 sq. ft. per resident: 442,000 sq. ft. <br />(359,000 sq. ft. increase) <br />11 <br />
