2. Select and describe the one project that was the most successful and the most unique
—the one that best exemplifies the Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Recognition
Award. (The ensuing questions must be answered based on this one project.)
The Community Involvement Committee reaches out to many different facets of the community
and touches a wide range of people locally and nationally through many different means. This
is accomplished as simply as an employee donating money each month through Casual for a
Cause to taking time out of their day to deliver meals for Meals on Wheels. Others have taken
time out of their evening to help assemble supplemental nutrition packs for 2nd Harvest
Heartland, which are distributed through the state and sometimes nationally. These
contributions are made through the following activities which are all chaired by volunteers on the
Community Involvement Committee:
Community Involvement Committee
United Way: PCU and its employees contribute to the local United Way. By taking advantage
of this opportunity, we were able to devote attention to our friends and neighbors in the tri-
county community. To boost United Way contributions, we held raffles for all staff. All prizes for
the raffle were contributed by local vendors, business contacts, and credit union employees.
The campaign was promoted through our staff newsletter, e-mail, memos, and word-of-mouth.
Monetary contributions by 124 employees were made through a one-time donation or payroll
deduction. The amount donated year to date is over $6000.
Meals on Wheels — Food Drives and Donations: Employees donate time once a month to
deliver Meals on Wheels to local elderly or shut in people. PCU employees and their families
donate also their time at 2nd Harvest Food Shelf to put together supplemental nutrition packs to
distribute to low income families and seniors.
Can for Kids: Donations of aluminum cans are collected and the proceeds are donated to St.
Jude's Children's Research Hospital. Employees help on a credit union wide basis by recycling
their aluminum cans. Once yearly there is an external can drive where members and non-
members alike are encouraged to drop off their aluminum cans at one of the three credit union
branches. Several employees donate a portion of their Saturday to collect the cans. This is a
Community Involvement Committee activity that was kicked off last fall. PCU collected 235
pounds of Aluminum cans which translated into $139.15.
Pop Tabs for Ronald McDonald House: Pop tabs are collected by the credit union and
donated to the Ronald McDonald House. As of June 2006, PCU has collected 44,364 tabs
which will be complied with the tabs collected in July and then donated to the Ronald McDonald
House.
Chain of Hearts, Children Miracle Network: Employees and members alike can contribute to
the Children's Miracle Network Chain of Hearts Campaign by purchasing a chain link or a heart.
Their name is written on the chain or heart and displayed in the branch in which it was
purchased. Our campaign this year raised over $600 for the Children's Miracle Network.
L4
