NewStudiv I orchitecture
While records indicate that two other schools based on Design 3C were built in Washington County in
the 1920s to 1930s, both have been razed, though two other, similar schoolhouses have been located
elsewhere in Minnesota. The recently restored District 6 Schoolhouse located in New Sweden has a
nearly identical exterior and was constructed in 1929 (See Appendix B)PI While documentation is
limited, it was likely based on the same Department of Education design. Another, similar schoolhouse
dating from the late 1920s exists in Willow River, Minnesota, but the exterior exhibits significant
differences that appear to be the result of later modification. The interior has been completely
remodeled into a residence [8) (See Appendix B).
The Hopkins Schoolhouse building occupies a rectangular footprint, with the main level occupying a
space roughly 32'x35', and the below grade level slightly larger at roughly 32'x43'. The below grade, or
basement level, extends beneath the large, covered porch on the main level, a feature that appears to
be uncommon among schoolhouses. This design element is commonly seen in bungalow -style
residential structures of the same era. The basement level extends approximately 48" above grade,
allowing for relatively generous ceiling heights and window sizes. This indicates that the basement level
was likely intended as habitable space and not simply utilitarian in nature, something corroborated by
the 1924 plan of Design 3C (See Appendix D).
The relative height of the basement also results in a main floor that, at four feet above grade, is
accessed by ascending a prominent set of front entry steps leading to the covered porch. A tall attic
space is located above the main level, and is accessed through a ceiling hatch located in the entry
vestibule. The roof features wide, overhanging eaves and a Dutch gable roof form.
Excluding the attic, the structure contains 14 separate rooms or spaces that are all believed to be
original based on a comparison with the original plan for Design 3C (See Appendix D).
STAIR
sTORAG'EMNCNEN
FURNACE
(ABANDONED)
1"
FURNACE LUNCH ROOM
ROOM
ORIGINAL
FURNACE
_
DN
STORAGE
I
FURNACE
ROOM
COAL ROOM
(ORIGINALy
COALCHUTE — t
32'- 0 112"
ON
STAIR
.
