NewStudio I orchitectare
ASSESSMENT OF ELIGIBILITY FOR LISTING ON THE NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES
BUILDING NAME: HOPKINS SCHOOLHOUSE — WASHINGTON COUNTY DISTRICT 73
BUILDING ADDRESS: 5970 170TH STREET NORTH, HUGO, MN, 55038
DATE: 01.05.2018
METHODOLOGY
The purpose of this report is to provide a thorough evaluation of the above property's potential
application for the United States Department of the Interior's National Register of Historic Places. This is
achieved through the following means: physical inspection and documentation of the property, historic
documentation of the property, and comparison to similar precedents in the National Register.
While this document provides a recommendation for or against National Register application, it does
not provide a guarantee of acceptance, nor does it necessarily provide all documentation necessary for
application. The goal is to provide a professional evaluation to the property owner/s and interested
stakeholders to facilitate an informed decision regarding National register application.
The information contained herein represents an educated assessment based on observable evidence
and available documentation. It is not intended for use outside the context of application for the
National Register of Historic Places.
DESCRIPTION
The former District 73 schoolhouse, known as the Hopkins School or Hugo Schoolhouse as described
herein, is located at 5970 170th Street North in Hugo, MN, and was constructed and opened in 1928. Per
school board meeting minutes, construction of the building was awarded to a Mr. Frank Henderiekson
from Forest Lake, Minnesota, for a price of $4,665 on June 23, 1928. A Mr. Svenson sold one acre of land
for $200, providing the site. 191
The building operated as a schoolhouse from 1928 until 1962, when school district consolidation in
Minnesota forced its closure. It was sold to Oneka Township in 1965,[1 and served as a town hall though
the early 1970s, a Boy Scout meeting space for some time after, and finally a youth center in the early
2000s. It has since fallen into disuse and been left vacant.ilol The building is now boarded up for safety
and preservation.
Minnesota State Department of Education records note the structure was completed on October 27tH
1928 and that the plans used were Design 3C (See Appendix C).1111 This design was part of a series of
school plans issued by the Minnesota Department of Education, intended to standardize the disparate
quality of schoolhouses being constructed throughout the state in the early 20th century. Several
editions of the various plans in the set have been located, and were published from 1910 through 1942.
Based on a comparative study of plans issued in 1910, 1912, 1914, 1916, and 1924, it is apparent that
the Hopkins Schoolhouse was built from the January 1924 edition of Design No. 3C with some minor
modifications (See Appendix D). 1121 [131 [141
mn 4431 Lake Avenue South, White Bear Lake, MN 55110. 651.207.5527 newstudioarchitecture.com
ny 61 Greenpoint Avenue, Suite 624, Brooklyn, NY 11222. 646.233.0426
