Owned by a religious institution or used for religious purposes.
B. Removed from its original location.
C. A birthplace or grave.
D. A cemetery.
E. A reconstructed building, object, or structure.
F. A commemorative property.
G. Less than 50 years old or achieving significance within the past 50 years. [41
Since both historic documents and onsite evidence indicate that the schoolhouse remains in its original
location, criteria B, as well as A, C, D, and F can be excluded.
Further, criteria E can be excluded. While it is in need of major repair, there is no evidence that any
disqualifying modifications or reconstruction, like those of the Willow River schoolhouse, have been
carried out. The building's structure appears to be sound, and most of the finishes are intact such that
they can be restored to their original condition. It should be noted, however, that significant
degradation beyond the building's present state, such that major reconstruction is required, could
present a disqualifying circumstance at a later date. The large hole in the roof near the chimney is of
particular concern.
Lastly, as the significance of the Hugo Schoolhouse is associated with its role in the larger educational
history of the United States (National Register Criteria, above), criteria G can be excluded as well.
Supporting documentation indicates that the building functioned as a school during the period from
1928-1962, all of which occurred more than 50 years ago. [2][4][9][101
HISTORIC LISTING PRECEDENTS
The National Register contains numerous listings for one -room schoolhouses, some of which are
contemporaneous and/or comparable in architectural and historical significance to the Hugo
Schoolhouse.
Beaver Meadow School
The Beaver Meadow School in Norwich, Vermont, added to the National Register in 2013, is a
schoolhouse built in 1922.
