NewStudiv I orchitecture
extensively than the Hugo Schoolhouse, with shed -roof additions to two of the four facades dating from
the 1940s.
The primary reasoning for listing this property could also apply to the Hugo Schoolhouse. The Beaver
Meadow School was added to the register as part of the Educational Resources of Vermont, with
justification in part being that the 'Beaver Meadow School is architecturally and historically significant
at the state and local levels as a very good example of a one -room school built in the first quarter of the
20th century. It is not only rare as a relatively late example of a one -room schoolhouse but its level of
architectural integrity — both exterior and interior — is outstanding. "[5)
Mann School No. 2
Mann School No. 2 in Moorhead, Iowa, was added to the National Register in 2001. Constructed in
1884, the design of this schoolhouse is more primitive than that of the Hugo Schoolhouse. Like the Hugo
Schoolhouse, it is not the site of any significant persons or events in history, but is one of few remaining
examples of the one -room schoolhouse vernacular in the area. Justification for listing reads in part, "The
Mann School is locally significant under Criterion A in Education and Social History as a reminder of early
educational practice and community involvement, and Criteria CArchitecture as a good intact
representative example of country school design... "[61
While the Mann School predates the Hugo Schoolhouse by several decades, its listing based on
educational history, community involvement, and status as a relatively intact example of its typology
easily applies to the Hugo Schoolhouse, the survival of which is quite notable given development
pressure from the surrounding suburbs.
Sydenstricker School
The Sydenstricker School, or Pohick School #8, in Fairfax County, Virginia, was listed in the National
Register in 2012. Located on the site of a school built in 1901 that had burned down, the Sydenstricker
School was constructed in 1928, the same year as the Hugo Schoolhouse. Unlike the Hugo Schoolhouse,
which functioned as a school into the 1960s, the Sydenstricker School only operated as a one -room
schoolhouse until 1939. Nevertheless, it was listed in large part based on its status as relatively late
example of the building type and for being "the last operating one -room schoolhouse in the county. 11i71
RECOMMENDATION
Based on available physical evidence, documentary evidence, and existing precedent, the Hugo
Schoolhouse appears to be a viable candidate for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places.
Specifically, the building seems best suited to qualify as a local contributor to the "Education" area of
significance, as established by the US Department of the Interior (qualifying criteria "A"). Further, the
building may be considered for architectural contribution (qualifying criteria "C) as a rare surviving
example of a rural schoolhouse constructed during the early 20th centuryPli41 Its proximity to a major
urban center undergoing tremendous outward growth makes its relatively intact survival both notable
and also tenuous if it is not protected in the near future.
mn 4431 Lake Avenue South, White Bear Lake, MN 55110. 651.207.5527 newstudioarchitecture.com
ny 61 Greenpoint Avenue, Suite 624, Brooklyn, NY 11222. 646.233.0426
