Enrichment programs give youth ways to be an active part <br />of their community while having fun and making new, positive <br />friendships. Jobs Plus programs give youth the skills necessary to <br />successfully enter the workforce: Tried and True Small Engines, <br />Job Connection, Junior Achievement, Get Hired, and more! <br />Making Connections Mentoring Program <br />Laura & Julie <br />Sometimes a perfect match takes some time to grow. Julie was only <br />10 years old when she signed up fbr a mentor. She was living in a <br />single house -hold with her father. She didn't have a mother figure to <br />help guide her in ways that a young girl needs..Her dad, John, <br />recognized this. <br />"She's an only child," John explained, "She needed female <br />companionship, someone she could talk to." <br />That's when we found Laura. She was excited to help youth to feel <br />valued and bring a positive energy in their lives. She was excited to <br />become a mentor, but knew that it may take some time for a youth <br />to open up. <br />"It's been quite a transformation," Laura says, "At first, she was always nervous and would look down at <br />the ground. Now, she talks more about her friends and school. I encourage her to be strong and be who <br />she is." <br />"It took a little bit to click, but I like our time together" Julie says, <br />who is now 12 years old. One of her favorite things is just spending <br />time together, like in their car rides. "Laura picks me up after school. <br />We play a game where she has me pick the direction to her house. It <br />helps me make decisions on my own." <br />After being together for only two years, Julie's dad says that Laura is <br />the best thing that has happened to Julie in over 4 years. Her self- <br />esteem has improved and she has a more positive outlook about <br />life. <br />Laura says, "It's been fun to see our relationship evolve. It's been <br />rewarding to see someone grow and change and know that I've <br />been impactful. I think we both have grown." <br />
