These peak flows can be expressed as a variable ratio applied
to average flow rates. This variable ratio, called the peak flow factor,
has been found to decrease as the average flow increases. The
peak flow factors applied in this study were based on typical MCES
peaking factors They are generally considered conservative, and are
widely used for planning in municipalities throughout the Twin Cities
Metropolitan Area Table 11-3 below lists the peaking factors used for
this study
Table 11-3 MCES Peak Flow Design Factors
Average Daily Flow (MGD)MCES Peak Flow
Design Factor
000 – 011 40
012 – 018 39
019 – 023 38
024 – 029 37
030 – 039 36
040 – 049 35
050 – 064 34
065 – 079 33
080 – 099 32
100 – 119 31
120 – 149 30
150 – 189 29
Average Daily Flow (MGD)MCES Peak Flow
Design Factor
190 – 229 28
230 – 289 27
290 – 349 26
350 – 419 25
420 – 509 24
510 – 639 23
640 – 799 22
800 – 1039 21
1040 – 1349 20
1350 – 1799 19
1800 – 2999 18
Over 3000 17
