Assistant Building Official Job Description <br />Page 2 of 3 <br />• Assists in preparing monthly and annual reports on construction activities and send to <br />regional, state and federal agencies. Submits reports, when necessary, to the City Council <br />and responds to any questions/concerns. <br />• Assists in water and sewer connection inspections to ensure code compliance. <br />• Assists in continually researching codes to maintain ready knowledge and responds to <br />requests for interpretation. <br />• Attends job -related training to keep up-to-date with law, code and regulation changes. <br />• Performs other related duties as assigned or as apparent. <br />REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SHILLS, and ABILITIES <br />• Knowledge of practices and procedures common to construction and development industries. <br />• Knowledge of the International Building Code, International Residential Code, Minnesota <br />Building Code, Minnesota Residential Code, State Accessibility Code, Fire Code, Life Safety <br />Code, Mechanical and Plumbing Codes and Housing Code. <br />• Knowledge of relevant state statutes and county and city ordinances. <br />• Knowledge of Permit Works and other typical office software. <br />• Ability to conduct precise plan checks. <br />• Skill to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing and make sometimes complex <br />and technical requirements understandable to the general public. <br />• Skill in enforcing codes and ordinances within the position's established authority. <br />• Ability to assign addresses to structures. <br />• Skill to interpret and apply applicable ordinances, statutes and codes. <br />• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the supervisor, <br />department heads, office staff, contractors and the public. <br />• Ability to perform work that requires light physical effort and a high degree of mobility to <br />climb step ladders and ramps, enter confined spaces and reach overhead or bend down for <br />inspections. <br />• Ability to use a telephone, copy machine, calculator and other office tools. <br />MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS <br />• Associate's Degree in Building Inspection Technology or related field, or equivalent <br />expenence. <br />• Certification by the State of Minnesota as a Certified Building Official. <br />• 4 or more years of progressively responsible experience in city/county/state building <br />inspection or related construction experience. <br />• Valid Minnesota driver's license and satisfactory motor vehicle report. <br />• Ability to safely perform physical tasks needed to conduct inspections at construction sites, <br />including at, above or below ground and including climbing ladders. <br />PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS <br />• Bachelor's Degree in Construction Management or closely related field. <br />• Additional inspections and/or construction experience. <br />• International Code Council (ICC) Building Official, Code Official and/or plans examiner <br />certification. <br />• Certifications as an inspector for on -site sewage treatment. <br />• Knowledge of basic zoning and land use practices. <br />• Experience with permitting software. <br />• Fluency in a second language. <br />WORKING CONDITIONS <br />
