Building Inspector Job Description <br />Page 2 of 2 <br /> <br />Minnesota State Building Code, ICBO Guidelines, state accessibility code, fire code, life <br />safety codes, mechanical and plumbing codes, and housing code. <br /> Knowledge of relevant state statutes, county and city ordinances. <br /> Ability to apply/interpret codes to a specific situation. <br /> Ability to communicate effectively (verbally and in writing). <br /> Ability to keep accurate records/notes/files. <br /> Skill in reading/understanding building/construction plans. <br /> Skill in data entry and ability to use phones, computer and copy machines. <br /> Ability to use City vehicles for work-related transportation. <br /> <br />MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS <br />High School degree or equivalent and knowledge building construction/design through training <br />and experience and familiarity with inspection procedures. Certification as a certified building <br />official-limited. Valid Minnesota driver’s license. <br /> <br />PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS <br />Associate’s degree in building inspection technology or certification in building inspection <br />technology and one or two years of inspection experience. <br /> <br />WORKING CONDITIONS <br />Works indoors in typical office setting and outdoors. Operates a vehicle for regular <br />transportation needs. Sits, stands and walks for extended periods of time. Crouches/kneels, <br />pushes/pulls, performs repetitive movements, and some lifting. Enters confined spaces and <br />works at varying heights including on scaffolding/construction projects/roofs/ladders. Short- <br />term exposures to chemicals, pesticides, fertilizers, construction chemicals, harmful dusts and <br />gases. Work in all temperature extremes, weather conditions. May work at hazardous, <br />dangerous, or unsafe construction sites and structure. Uses radio phone for communication and <br />all types of vision and other senses for inspection purposes. <br /> <br /> <br />
