Once again, we are expecting
this spring to kick off a busy construction season. It is exciting to see all of the new projects in
the City, some of which are highlighted in this newsletter. By the time you see a building under
construction, there is so much work that had to take place in order to get to ground breaking
and it can be quite the process. Between the first pre -application meeting with staff and final
Council approval, there are often many changes and improvements that take place. The goal is
to be able to provide the best possible project for the community.
Our various City commissions play a key role in guiding projects toward established community
goals. The Economic Development Authority, Historical Commission, Parks Commission, and
Planning Commission are all very important volunteer commissions that review and provide
comments on applications or projects that are presented to the City. The Commissions meet
on a regular basis and all meetings are open to the public. During the meetings, discussions
are guided by the Chair and the Commissioners discuss current projects. These Commissions
do a great job at listening to the public, asking questions of the applicants, and providing
recommendations to the City Council. Many of our Commissioners and past Commis-
sioners have volunteered for several years and have made a great impact on our community.
Currently serving as Chairs are Dave Strub from the Parks Commission, Bronwen Kleissler
from the Planning Commission, Cynthia Schoonover from the Historical Commission, and
myself for the Economic Development Authority. At the beginning of 2021, the City Council
interviewed many candidates and appointed seven new commissioners to our various
commissions. I'd like to introduce them to everyone and thank them for wanting to help make
our community such a great place to live, work, and play.
If you have a question you would like to ask the Mayor,
4 send it to info@ci.hugo.mn.us
Your question could be featured in the next newsletter!
Tom Weidt, Mayor _
What is your favorite thing to do in Hugo?
What are your goals for being on the Commission?
Emily McGinnity, Parks Commission
enjoy walking the many paths in my neighborhood and
exploring the new paths as new developments are added. Hugo Good
Neighbor Days is always a good time in the summer as well!
My goal for being on the Commission is to become
more involved in the community development. With all the new
homes being built I would like to see what the options would be for
more ballfields for baseball and softball, outdoor hockey rinks, etc.
Meredith St. Pierre, Parks Commission
My husband and I love to walk our dogs in the Irish Avenue
Park. It's a wonderful gem within our City to experience nature and
witness the changing of the seasons.
think it's important that the City of Hugo ensure there are spaces
and opportunities for people to enjoy outdoor space and recreation
opportunities for generations to come. I also want the City to continue
to think beyond playgrounds and sports fields to other ways citizens
and visitors can experience public spaces.
(continued on page 3)
