FINAL DELIVERABLE : HSHC 3
Background & Research
Project Background
The Hopkins Schoolhouse and Heritage Center is located in the City of Hugo. Surrounding towns
and stakeholders include Forest Lake, White Bear Lake, and others. The Schoolhouse originally served as
an elementary school for grades 1-8 until the mid-1940s and then only for grades 1-6 until the school's
closure in 1962.
After serving as an elementary school the Hopkins Schoolhouse and property were purchased by
Oneka Township and was used as their Town Hall until 1972. After the City of Hugo was formed, the
Hopkins Schoolhouse and Heritage Center took over ownership of the building.
Once the City of Hugo had ownership, the building was used by Boy Scouts as a youth center and
meeting space. The Schoolhouse has been vacant since the early 2000s, until now. The Hopkins
Schoolhouse and Heritage Center is being restored with strong support from the community. Our problem
statement reads as follows: the Hopkins Schoolhouse and Heritage Center needs to be restored and boost
community involvement, and ensure long-term sustainability. The task is to create a strategic plan that
revitalizes its historical charm, improves operations, and financial sustainability, and fosters a strong
community connection, securing its position as a cherished local heritage center. The organization hopes
to have the schoolhouse in full operation by 2028. The following information presented to you will
include different ideas for marketing and operations, a financial analysis, a competitor analysis, and
overall recommendations.
Research and Methods Used for Project
We started the project research first with a virtual meeting with our client contact Liz Cinoquence,
and the board members of the Hopkins Schoolhouse and Heritage Center. They provided us with
information regarding their goals. Next, we had a site visit where we were able to see the schoolhouse and
Page 49 of 89
