FINAL DELIVERABLE : HSHC 4
property and gain further insights into the community and how the schoolhouse could meet community
needs. We created an affinity map with our observations and determined that there were various
opportunities where the schoolhouse could continue to serve the community. We presented the
opportunities we found to the board members to gain feedback from them and see if they were interested
in pursuing them.
Next, we researched various other historical societies in the metro area. We picked them in part
based on financial success, those organizations that reported greater than $50,000 of revenue had to file a
complete financial statement with the IRS. We reviewed those financial statements to see how they were
performing financially. The financial statements were analyzed on a spreadsheet to determine how much
of the organization’s revenue was due to operational activities, grants, and public support. The client had
provided a document of grant opportunities the organization was pursuing for funding the restoration of
the schoolhouse. We researched to see if any of the options could be pursued for future grants to the
schoolhouse. We also looked into other organizations that provided training, operational, and financial
support for smaller historical organizations.
We also picked organizations that had operations similar to the opportunities we found for the
schoolhouse. We also reviewed their websites to research their operational activities. We were able to look
for trends in operating activities that matched the opportunities we found for the schoolhouse. We focused
on activities that generate revenue for the schoolhouse and will allow HSHC to focus on its mission of
sharing local history with the community.
We created a chart listing gathering spaces in Hugo and Forest Lake. This chart included the
prices of the space, hours, and amenities. We used the chart to help position the Schoolhouse as a
gathering space. We then looked for additional uses of the trailhead which has been used as a resting place
for those walking the trails. Our findings can be shown in the next section of the marketing and operations
plan.
