March 1, 2024
Mayor Tom Weidt & Council Members Becky Petryk, Phil Klein, David Strub, and Mike Miron
City of Hugo
14669 Fitzgerals Ave. N
Hugo, MN 55038
Dear Members of the City Council,
The Hopkins Schoolhouse and Heritage Center (HSHC) Board of Directors is excited to share with you the
remarkable progress and accomplishments achieved in 2023, and the proposed measures of success for
2024.
Over the past year, the HSHC Board of Directors has diligently worked towards the establishment of a new
non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and management of the schoolhouse and operation of
the heritage center. The formation of the new non-profit heritage center marks a significant milestone in our
journey towards sustainable preservation and community engagement, and we look forward to completing
the final steps to securing 501c-3 status in 2024.
One of our most notable achievements in 2023 includes the completion of Phase 1 repairs to the Hopkins
Schoolhouse building. This pivotal phase encompassed the replacement of the roof, repair and painting of
the soffit, and restoration of the chimney. These essential repairs safeguard the structural integrity of the
building as we continue the future stages of restoration.
As we reflect on the accomplishments of the past year, we recognize that none of this would have been
possible without the support of the City Council and the unwavering commitment of our community
members. Your support for preserving our cultural heritage has been instrumental in shaping the success of
our endeavors.
Looking ahead, we are excited to build upon our achievements and continue our collaborative efforts to
enrich the cultural fabric of our city. Together, we can ensure that the Hopkins Schoolhouse remains a beacon
of history, education, and community pride for years to come.
Thank you for your attention, and we look forward to the opportunity to discuss our accomplishments during
the City Council meeting on March 4.
Sincerely,
Justin Brink
President
Forest Lake Historical Society
Liz Cinqueonce
President
Hopkins Schoolhouse and Heritage Center
