Letter from the Mayor (cont’d)
The food shelf is grateful to receive donations of canned and packaged
goods, but taking the step to volunteer makes a large impact. Volunteers can
help out in a wide variety of ways, from stocking shelves, managing inventory,
helping clients with shopping, packing grocery bags, and helping out with
special events throughout the year. To find out how you donate to the
food shelf, or volunteer, visit hugofoodshelf.org/get-involved.
Finally, I’d like to highlight the Hugo Lions Club, who are behind several
community events that bring the City together. Recently the Hugo Lions cele-
brated their 50th Anniversary, marking a half-century of volunteers who have
put their time back into the community. The Hugo Lions are often seen at one
of the many events they host throughout the year, such as the Golf Scramble,
the Senior Dinner, the Ice Fishing Contest, or collecting donations of eyeglass-
es. These events raise funds to support multiple causes throughout the com-
munity, and 100% of funds are put back into the community. The Lions’ biggest
event of the year was extra special in 2024; Good Neighbor Days returned to
the newly redesigned Lions Volunteer Park. The park redesign was led by a
group of volunteer residents of Hugo over a period of 10 years, and the park’s
renaming from Lions Park to Lions Volunteer Park reflects the effort of Hugo’s
volunteers in the park’s reconstruction. A large focus of the redesign was to
create a park better suited to host festival-style events, like Good Neighbor
Days. The return of Good Neighbor Days to Lions Volunteer Park was
a success by many accounts, bringing Hugo residents together in their new
destination community space. I’m already looking forward to Good Neighbor
Days this summer, which will be at Lions Volunteer Park from June 6-8,
2025.
For more information on the Hugo Lions Club and to find out how you can
volunteer, visit goodneighbordays.com
Numerous volunteer organizations have contributed to building this sense
of community, beyond the three organizations that I’ve mentioned. The City
Website has a list of community organizations that make Hugo a fantastic
place to live. However, a letter about volunteers in Hugo wouldn’t be complete
without a highlight of those who serve on City Commissions. Volunteering for
a City Commission is an excellent way to be involved in local government. The
City is always looking for new volunteers to serve, and three Commissions
currently have vacancies.
If you have ever been curious about
local government, or would like to be
more involved with the City, please
consider applying to serve on a
City Commission.
Tom Weidt, Mayor
2
GET INVOLVED!
The City of Hugo is looking for
new Volunteers to serve on City
commissions!
