IV. Parks List of Priorities
Roger Clark asked each commission member to list park priorities that need to be
evaluated for budget consideration for 2009.
Items of interest that were discussed and determined to be important follow:
1. Further Development of Rice Lake Soccer Fields ($100,000.00)
Berger made a motion, Taylor seconded, for City Staff to work with Laurie
McRostie on the development of Phase III concept for Rice Lake Park.
2. Additional supplies and equipment at Rice Lake Park ($10,000 WB Soccer
money)
3. Continuing research of "needs" and location search for "Large Acreage Park"
• Restricted access at Clearwater Park ($1500)
• Pad for seasonal restroom and landscaping at Frog Hollow Park ($1000)
• Tot Time equipment upgrades ($1500/year)
• Bridge across creek at Clearwater Park
• Lions Park play structure updating
• Bernin Environmental Assessment
• Heritage Ponds Park equipment
V. Discussion on Park/Rec. Activities at neighborhood parks (Rachel)
Tabled, but then discussed with item VI.
VI. Other
The Commission discussed the presentation by Skyhawks. It was determined that
future evaluations are necessary with the population growth and lack of team
placement occurring frequently with the Hugo youth. Considerations of population
growth encourages further discussions on looking into outside vendors entering the
community, starting a separate recreation department or continuing with current
White Bear lake Area schools community service and recreation program.
The commission entered into a lengthy discussion on the future needs of parks and
recreation programming staff. It was agreed that the development of a parks and
recreation position is approaching.
Berger made motion, Schmidt seconded, to direct Commission Member Taylor to
meet with City Administrator Ericson to discuss the future of a parks and recreation
position.
