MINUTES
REGULAR CITY COUNCIL MEETING
JUNE 14, 1978
Page 5
Clerk Administrator Barnes presented the 1978 Shade Tree SHADE TREE
removal reimbursement policy. It was noted that last REMOVAL
year the City reimbursed 80% of the cost of removal for PROGRAM
private property trees, with the State reimbursing the REIMBURSEMENT
City 370. This year the State will reimburse 280 of POLICY
what we contribute.
Councilmember McGough reported on the tree committee
action taken at their meeting of June 13, 1978. The
committee had discussed ordering of trees and amount
needed for the planting program. Concern was expressed
on the costs involved due to the size of the new trees
being larger than the trees planted in the spring of
1978. The order for trees will be 235 trees, excluding
Larpenteur Avenue, Snelling Avenue, Roselawn Avenue and
Hamline Avenue as these are County and State streets.
If these were ordered, the total would be 345 trees. The
order for trees will be placed before the end of June to
be sure of availability.
The other problem noted is the size of tree specified in
the tree ordinance. The ordinance states 2" or larger,
the cost of a tree that size would be $100 to $200,
balled burlaped The bare-root trees ordered would be
14 to 12" in size at considerably less in price. The
quantities to be ordered are:
Hoyt (north side only) 15 Imperial Honey Locust
Iowa 10 Marshal Seedless Ash
Idaho 10 Sugar Maple
California 15 Redmond Linden
Crawford (If north side 10 Silver Maple
is planted)
Asbury 20 Marshal .Seedless Ash
Arona 30 Red Maple (Sunset)
Pascal 45 Hackberry
Simpson 40 Redmond Linden
Holton 20 Imperial Honey Locust
Albert 15 Sugar Maple
Garden (east of Snelling) 5 Sugar Maple
As this is an estimated quantity, there may be trees left
over, we are requesting the extra trees be placed in the
park. A trench would have to be dug, 300' bed, 18 to 24"
deep, 22 to 3' wide where we can heal the trees in. It
was suggested to place the trench along the east boundry
fence of the park, this has the least amount of traffic,
70 yards of dirt for planting would be needed, also, the
dirt removed from the trench would have to be disposed of.
Clerk Administrator Barnes was requested to check with the
U of M to obtain dirt fill. Councilmember Steele moved
adoption of the following resolution:
