Ayes: All.
Report from Nays: None. Motion carried.
Councilman Black on
Tennis Courts at Saturday, Dec~nber 1l~, 1968, the following people met in
Falcon Heights connection with a development site for tennis courts on the
Elementary School: school grounds:
Lloyd C. Neilsen - Superintendent of School District 623
Morris Nicholson - Member of School Boaxd
Billie Foreman - Chairman of Falcon Heights Recreation Committee
North Cornforth - Principal of Falcon Heights Elementary School
William Black and Brad Lemberg
The possibility of obtaining and leasing a site on the
Falcon Heights Elementary School playground for the purpose
of a double tennis court, at Village expense, was discussed
in great detail. Detailed plans which had been prepared by
the Engineer were submitted and discussed and explained to
the various people present at the meeting.
It was pointed out by the Superintendent of School District
623 as well as the Principal that it would be extremely
difficult to justify a tennis court on elementary school
property until plans could be drawn showing a distinct
benefit to aid students who attend the school. Along these
lines there was discussion regarding the use of the courts
for school recreational purposes, including the possible
installation of basketball back-boards adjacent to the surfaced
tennis court area. This would provide more recreational
possibilities for elementary students.
The Superintendent stated that the total land area available
at the Falcon Heights Elementary School is not excessive,
considering the present enrollment ofthe school, and there is
some indication that this might increase. He indicated trends
in various other 'close-in'~ school in other metropolitan areas.
There the trend has been for these so called ~tclose-in'~
communities to remain rather stable for a while, which is
followed by older people moving out and younger families
moving into the area, which the Superintendent feels might
happen in this school.
The Village Engineer has agreed to draw up further plans
which will attempt to embody the suggestions that we received
at this meeting from the officials of the school. However,
I feel that despite all of our arguments, I am rather pessimistic
that we will be able to gain property to build a tennis court
at that location. I will say that further plans are being
developed and we will follow up. We must plan maximum
utilization in such a way as to include some benefit to the
school in order to be successful.
